Climate change claim on behalf of New Zealands indigenous Mori peoples

Abstract: This article discusses a claim made on behalf of New Zealand’s M_ori indigenous people in regard to government climate change polices. The claim has been brought in New Zealand’s Waitangi Tribunal being a specialist tribunal formed to hear claims that the government has breached its treaty obligations towards M_ori. It is discussed that the claim illustrates the potential for indigenous groups in their capacity as traditional guardians of the natural environment to bring claims against governments for failing to put in place adequate environmental policies.
