Accelerating the bioeconomy and the innovation process with the emergent concept of biofoundries

Abstract:
The synthetic biology potential refers to the possibility of redesigning existing natural biological systems not only to enhance the efficiency of processes but also to allow reactions not possible before. This explains the rapidly expanding number of applications and also increases the diversity of bio-based ingredients and products to be offered, strengthening the proposal of a bioeconomy and the emergence of novel value chains. Biofoundries take a step further. By combining synthetic biology, engineering cycles, automation, and machine learning algorithms, they enhance reproducibility, multiplies target possibilities, and implement lean management concepts focused on the reduction of costs and time-to-market. If designed and placed properly, biofoundries may complement biorefineries and even accelerate the cascading or circular use of biomass. In this chapter, we thus present the role of biofoundries in increasing the diversity of bio-based ingredients and products and their crucial bridging aspect in accelerating the transformation of bench experiments into reliable potential targets for industry exploration. Furthermore, we discuss current challenges in implementing biofoundries and highlight potential research fields in innovation management that this implementation touches.
