Political organisation
Alexander Neupert-Doppler
Chapter 37 in Research Handbook on Critical Theory, 2026, pp 429-436 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Critical theory reflects on the history of political forms of organisation, from parties and unions to workers’ councils and social movements. The reflections of Walter Benjamin from the 1920s, of Max Horkheimer from the 1930s to the 1950s, or of Herbert Marcuse from the 1960s and 1970s are, on the one hand, historical, but on the other hand, they provide inspiration for today's debates. Alexander Neupert-Doppler distinguishes between traditional forms of organisation (party, union, cooperative) and oppositional forms of organisation (movement, workers’ council, community organising).
