Political socialisation

Maria Tsenekidou

Chapter 38 in Research Handbook on Critical Theory, 2026, pp 437-449 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In critical political psychology, it is usual to speak of socialisation concerning societal subject formations or of politicisation with regard to risings of critical consciousness. The term ‘political socialisation’ expresses more strongly the tension relation between heteronomy and autonomy, which is characterised by conflicts and contradictions. Its use can sharpen the focus on specific political dimensions of socialisation processes and on socialisational dimensions of politicisation processes. Digital media can be understood as important instances of political socialisation and psychosocial spaces of political fantasies – without short circuits between drive structures and societal structures under the sign of total reification, but also without illusions of full subjective autonomy beyond heteronomous societal conditions. This chapter outlines challenges regarding renewing critical-theoretical perspectives on current phenomena of the reification of authority and social control as well as emancipative potentials of political socialisations.
