Youth
Douglas Kellner
Chapter 46 in Research Handbook on Critical Theory, 2026, pp 548-562 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Youth, as the Romantics and critical theorists like Walter Benjamin have argued, is a great anticipatory stage when life unfolds as envisioning both great possibilities as well as challenges and dangers. In accord with their dialectical vision of life, the critical theorists looked at youth in terms of its utopian possibilities for a better life and society, at the same time as they saw horrors of the present as possibly leading to greater catastrophe.
