The culture industry in late capitalism

Rainer Winter

Chapter 7 in Research Handbook on Critical Theory, 2026, pp 61-73 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines the conceptual facets and theoretical significance of the concept of the culture industry established by Horkheimer and Adorno, as well as its further development in their work following Dialectic of Enlightenment. We will first define the essential elements of this concept. Then, the concept of the culture industry is subjected to critical reflection, which is argued against the backdrop of recent insights from social and cultural studies on art, film and popular culture.
