Development with identity: connecting place, culture and food in Andean Latin America
Simon Bidwell
Chapter 8 in Ethical Value Networks in International Trade, 2022, pp 132-148 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the construction of networks linking place, food and identity in Andean Latin America with a focus on Peru. It traces the intersection between two tendencies. The first involves attempts within development practice to mobilize distinctive biocultural features of Andean places as sources of social cohesion, marketable authenticity and environmental resilience. The second relates to the new visibilities and values accorded to Andean foods and farming practices, driven by a combination of social movements, and academic and market agendas. The chapter looks at how these tendencies have come together into projects to link food, identity and development in the Andes, and assesses the potential for these projects to deliver on their promises.
