Do feminist insiders matter? Progress in conceptualization and comparative theory-building

Abstract: The goal of this chapter is to propose a more precise definition of feminist insider activism (FIA) by building on the body of international and comparative work that has focused on the question of insiders. The first part of the chapter traces the evolution of the term from its origins outside gender and politics research to its use in studies that examine the connections between women’s movements and state action. The second section proposes a working definition of feminist insider activism for empirical research. The conclusion turns to the next steps in the emerging research agenda on feminist insiders and its implications for feminist governance and the democratic performance. In the final analysis, systematic comparative study of feminist insider activism has the potential to make the state more representative and responsive to a range of gender interests and claims.
