Chapter 4 in The Content, Impact, and Regulation of Streaming Video, 2021, pp 59-106 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The preceding chapter identified the technical building blocks for content creation, which include individualization, immersion, and interactivity. This chapter discusses the resulting new types of content. Obviously, there will be more of everything. But this “widening†only scratches the surface. The truly important changes are not those of quantity but of the nature of content, its style and genres. The leading edge, high creativity, big-budget productions of content of visual media will gradually evolve from narrative to experience. It will generate environments in which users actively participate, and whose level of stimulation and involvement they can regulate to suit their desired mood. The chapter then looks at steps and applications in that directions, in advertising, shopping, sports, romance, user-generated content, location-based content, documentaries, education, and 3-D. Examples of individualization and immersion are described.
