Abstract:
This study examines soft budget constraints (SBCs) in French professional football. To do so, we analysed the financial data of 25 professional football clubs that participated in Ligue 1 and/or Ligue 2, the two French professional first-tier divisions, at least once over the 2009-2018 period. The results reveal that, the better a club performs from a sporting standpoint, the more it operates under a soft budget constraint and vice versa. Thus, this study clarifies the concept of budget constraint and presents a typology of constraints based on criteria that have not yet been applied.
