Chapter 8 in Research Handbook on Energy Management, 2025, pp 190-210 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Open source modeling involves publishing the code of software models and the input and output data used within energy systems research. By making accessible and documenting applied processes, processed data sets, and obtained analysis results, it provides a comprehensible basis for decision-making, which is needed for transparent energy management. The sharing of research data, be it computer programs, data sets, documentation, or other research output, should adhere to the FAIR principles in order to make them as findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable as possible. In this chapter, all information required for a practical implementation of the abstract principles with regard to the publication of software models, analysis workflows and input and output data is compiled and prepared in the form of best practices. In addition to the preparation of research data, the focus is on their publication within the heterogeneous research data infrastructure. Special attention is given to the selection and application of open source licenses.
