.

Chapter 3 in The Economics of COVID-19, 2021, pp 42-74 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the world in ways that have not been experienced in generations. It is unquestionably one of the most significant global events in recent history, impacting every aspect of daily life. This chapter is devoted to an examination of the economic and social effects of Covid-19. The effects considered are the macroeconomic effects, financial effects (corporate debt, stock markets, oil prices, banks and financial institutions, and foreign exchange markets), the sectoral effects (GDP by sector, arts and cultural heritage, aviation, sporting events, international tourism and higher education), and socio-economic effects (crime, domestic violence and poverty). A comparison between the Covid-19 crisis and the global financial crisis is presented.
