The politics of social protection in the global South
Sarah M. Brooks
Chapter 3 in Handbook on Social Protection and Social Development in the Global South, 2023, pp 44-62 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The recent expansion of social protection for the poorest citizens in the global South brings attention to the role of the state in social development and thus to the ways in which social protection, and hence state policy choices, shapes social development. This chapter examines the role of the state - and specifically politics - in shaping the nature and outcome of social protection policies, with special emphasis on the most recent dynamics of anti-poverty transfers for the poorest citizens. It also raises questions about the implications of the current politics of social protection for future generations of recipients.
