Life cycle assessment

Noémie Leroy-Parmentier, Pia Wiche and Guido Sonnemann

Chapter 6 in Handbook on Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2024, pp 60-76 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) is based on the Triple Bottom Line and the assessment of environmental, economic and social pillars. LCSA can be considered as the integration of (Environmental) Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) in order to evaluate the overall sustainability of the system under study. LCA according to the ISO 14040:2006 standard is the basis of the two other life cycle based techniques: S-LCA and LCC. An overview of assessment methodology based on the ISO 14044 standard and the 2017 book Life Cycle Assessment: Theory and Practice by Hauschild and colleagues is presented, illustrated by a simplified comparative assessment of menstrual products. The framework and main requirements of the standard are reviewed and explained in order to discuss the main phases of carrying out a Life Cycle Assessment, which are goal and scope definition, including functional unit, definition and allocation procedure; inventory analysis; impact assessment, including category indicators, impact pathways and method selection; and interpretation.
