Chapter 7 in Handbook on Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2024, pp 77-88 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter aims at providing an overview of the Life Cycle Costing (LCC) technique. With this technique it is possible to assess the economic pillar of life cycle sustainability studies. In this chapter, the different types of economic analyses that are linked to the LCC will be described. An introduction to the four LCC variations (i.e. financial LCC (fLCC), environmental LCC (eLCC), full environmental LCC (feLCC), and societal LCC (sLCC)) will be given, covering their fundamental principles, their main challenges and limitations, and their particular applications. Special attention will be given to eLCC, whose methodology is widely related to the holistic sustainability assessments; it will be presented step by step as an illustrative case.
