Design thinking - Human-centred design in sport for development

Greg Joachim

Chapter 32 in Handbook of Sport and International Development, 2023, pp 386-396 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In recent years, sport research has begun to consider the value that the management practice of design thinking - a human-centred approach to generating innovation - might hold for sport organisations. Indeed, design thinking has been shown to be especially useful for - and well-suited to adoption by - sport for development (SFD) organisations. This chapter introduces design thinking as a concept and approach to practice before exploring SFD research for opportunities to usefully adopt design thinking into SFD practice. Thereafter, a number of practical activities and techniques are outlined and, based on practical experience, recommended for SFD practitioners and researchers interested in adopting design thinking. Throughout the chapter, design thinking is foregrounded as a means of overcoming ongoing critical issues within SFD practice and research, such as the subjugation of local voices in planning and delivering SFD programs.
