The journey to net zero cities with sustainability: global and personal

Peter Newman ()

Chapter 1 in Net Zero Cities with Sustainability, 2025, pp 1-18 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The global commitment to Net Zero with Sustainability is traced to the Paris Agreement and the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, but they grew from over 50 years of science and professional practice that enabled, first, Environmental Protection, then Sustainable Development, and now Net Zero with Sustainable Development. These global changes are given a personal perspective that sets up the approach being adopted in the whole book. It suggests we need to address the transition to net zero cities with sustainability using structural, political and hopeful approaches, especially in a time of climate denial.
