Creative destruction: historical transitions for urban responses after economic collapse
Peter Newman ()
Chapter 2 in Net Zero Cities with Sustainability, 2025, pp 19-37 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Creative destruction is explained and used to show how different economic collapses have led to waves of innovation. A sixth wave is now enabling net zero cities with sustainability innovations. The six core innovations are renewables with batteries, electric vehicles, smart systems, circular economy, biophilic urbanism, and hydrogen. These are expected to change cities and will cause decoupling from fossil fuels that are arguably more important than degrowth approaches to the future of cities.
