Technology: long-wave innovation theory and multi-level perspectives in the new economy
Peter Newman ()
Chapter 3 in Net Zero Cities with Sustainability, 2025, pp 38-72 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The sixth-wave innovations are analysed in terms of their commerciality with the first three – renewables and batteries, electric vehicles, and smart systems – clearly cheaper and being rapidly adopted, while the other three – circular economy, biophilics, and hydrogen – are not. Multi-level perspectives show the first three need governments to be more enabling without the need for subsidies, and the second three require more research and development assistance.
