Abstract: Infrastructure for sustainability and resiliency is an emerging issue that many state and local governments are beginning to address. With more than 50 percent of Americans living in coastal areas, critical infrastructure sectors are increasingly vulnerable to climate impacts such as rising sea levels, storm surges, and flooding. Inland local communities also face problems of wildfires, riverine flooding, and drought. Investing in sustainable and resilient infrastructure can prevent billions in future climate-related damages and economic losses. This chapter presents useful research directions on infrastructure resilience finance, providing the practical guidance to the financing of major sustainable and resilient infrastructure projects in American local communities. The primary objectives and content of this chapter are to (1) articulate the critical importance of building climate-resilient infrastructure systems, (2) describe the investment needs of climate-resilient infrastructure systems, (3) identify current practices, emerging trends, and future challenges in funding and financing infrastructure resilience, and (4) discuss the key public financial management aspects of the climate-resilient infrastructure systems.
