Finite Marxism

Frieder Otto Wolf

Chapter 3 in Marx: Key Concepts, 2024, pp 32-48 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In order to advance double goal of improving marxist contributions to critical science and marxist contributions to emancipatory politics, I shall refer back to Althusser‘s little known essay ‘Marxism as a finite theory’, especially linking his problematics of a finite theory to the Marxian topic of the ‘limits of dialectical presentation’. On this basis I shall propose the notions of a finite project and a finite initiative as a starting point for rethinking ‘marxist politics’, and for establishing the ground-work for a Marxian philosophy which is capable of articulating an idea of ‘finite plurality’ as an attractive alternative to the notion of a ‘monist infinity‘, as well as to that of an ‘anything-goes infinity’.
