Introduction: Rethinking development politics … psychoanalytically
.
Chapter 1 in Rethinking Development Politics, 2024, pp 1-21 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The introduction outlines the main claims of the book by defining ‘psychoanalysis’ and ‘development politics’, and examining their intersection. It addresses why a psychoanalytic development politics is needed, as well as why there is resistance to it in the field. It delineates the key contributions of psychoanalysis by focusing on: how capitalist development seduces; why unconscious desire often matters more than knowledge (‘fetishistic disavowal’); how to do a psychoanalytic ideology critique; and what a psychoanalytic radical politics might look like (a politics of desire/drive).
