Economic research at Asian Development Bank: a retrospective

Abstract: This chapter provides a retrospective on economic research at the ADB. In so doing, it describes the institutional arrangements of research as well as the scope of economic research and statistics works undertaken in the ADB and ADBI. Although the evolution of the research function at the ADB did not follow a linear pattern but grew by fits and starts, the chapter maintains that ADB has found a distinct voice - somewhat less doctrinaire; somewhat distinct from that of Bretton-Woods institutions; and more grounded in Asian realities. The ADB has the potential to be the interlocutor of Asian development dynamics, which has, in the last 50 years, gone through both a miraculous economic and social transformation as well as suffered some of the worst natural and economic calamities. The chapter concludes that the ADB is in a good position to research and disseminate the lessons of these developments from which the world could learn and benefit.
