Chapter 13 in Handbook of Experimental Development Economics, 2025, pp 310-336 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Lab-in-the-field experiments can provide important behavioral insights into decisions made by diverse populations in developing countries. We provide an overview of common practices in designing and conducting lab-in-the-field experiments. Some of these practices are well established, and some are evolving. To that end we performed a selective evaluation of the recent literature and designed a modest survey of experts, eliciting the practices they have adopted in their research. The topics discussed span from determining the appropriate sample size and recruiting participants to scrutiny effects and generalizability of findings.
