Health systems and sustainable development in a context of environmental change

Abstract: Organized health systems are barely a century old and it was not until the achievement of the Alma Ata accord in 1978 that the relationship between health and development was first recognized by international institutions, a relationship that was firmly buttressed by major reports issued by the World Bank in 1994 and the World Health Organization in 2003. Despite this recognition, research that focuses on the relationship between health systems and development in a context of environmental change is just now emerging. Of note are the emergence of systems theory, “big data” analytics, and scenario modeling; methodological approaches that permit for more informed planning and development of resilient health systems. In this chapter I briefly review significant moments in the history of health systems research in global health, describe conceptual and methodological innovations that have recently emerged to enable a more fine-grained analysis of health systems adaptation and resilience, and discuss future needs and directions.
