Sociological institutionalism: conceptualizing media governance as institution and organization

Abstract: Sociological institutionalism has sparked considerable interest among scholars in communication studies as well as in media policy and governance research. With its origin in organizational analysis, the theory is particularly useful for understanding the recursive relationship between institutional environments and organizations as well as processes of isomorphism in organizational fields. Following a discussion of media governance as an analytical concept, this chapter briefly introduces the basics of sociological institutionalism. It then shows that using this variant of new institutionalism as a theoretical foundation for media governance opens up a dual view. On the one hand, sociological institutionalism allows for discussing how media governance affects media and platform organizations and how they respond to governance. On the other hand, the theory makes it possible to focus on the embeddedness of governance organizations in their respective institutional environments.
