Modeling and analyzing gray zone scenarios for crises in the Aegean Sea and South China Sea

Alexander H. Levis

Chapter 8 in Escalation Management in International Crises, 2023, pp 201-230 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In Chapter 8, two case studies are presented in order to explore the dynamics of escalation management under a variety of circumstances. The two models, one on the recurring Aegean Sea crisis between Turkey and Greece and the other the continuing crisis in the South China Sea, involve multiple participating entities. By manipulating the parameters of each model and the characteristics of the participating entities, these simulation experiments are focused on identifying outcomes associated with policy choices made by decision makers in international crisis environments.
