Chapter 2 in Handbook of Innovation & Appropriate Technologies for International Development, 2022, pp 7-21 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Humanitarian engineering and international development are now common areas of investigation at universities as are service-learning programs. The MIT D-Lab, with a poverty-alleviation mission and working across multiple sectors, grounds its academic, research, and field programs in a deeply human and collaborative approach to working with community partners around the world. The chapter explores the principles and philosophical frameworks which have guided the development and growth of the D-Lab and provides concrete examples of the projects that have emerged.
