Responsible mixed methods research (RMMR): a case for managing ethics and AI in MMR

Heinz Herrmann and Roslyn Cameron

Chapter 5 in Handbook of Mixed Methods Research in Business and Management, 2023, pp 55-75 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: We present a new ethical dimension of mixed methods research (MMR) with embedded artificial intelligence (AI), referred to as responsible MMR (RMMR). First, we present an overview of ethical principles applied to research from several national and international perspectives before dealing specifically with ethical considerations for MMR as evidenced in recent research from within the MMR scholarly community. This is followed by a description of a unified framework for responsible AI (RAI) governance, which has gained traction in the last decade, due to spectacular and widely publicised failures of AI. Then we synthesise the ethical considerations for MMR and the RAI framework towards RMMR. The chapter concludes by making a set of five recommendations based on the RMMR proposition.
