Abstract: Chapter 5 focuses on religion as a ‘personality system’, i.e., a shaper of personality, thence a driver of human behaviour and the motivation of people to act. The focus of this chapter is on the behaviour of elected and tenured officials, as well as of individuals engaged in the provision of public services in the third sector, and of citizens-users of public services at large. Five themes have been identified as especially significant for the analytical study of the influence of religion as a personality system on PA. Throughout the book, we will also refer to these themes as micro-level themes, because they are centred on the level of individuals.
