Introduction to the Handbook on Child Poverty and Inequality

Alberto Minujin and Enrique Delamonica

A chapter in Handbook on Child Poverty and Inequality, 2025, pp 1-10 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The purpose of this Handbook is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to present and discuss the state of the art in conceptualizing and measuring children living in poverty and the inequalities they face. On the other hand, it seeks to stake out new research questions and topics regarding child poverty and inequalities. Twenty years after the first estimation of multidimensional child poverty, we can see that the awareness of the need and usefulness of that measure has increased. However, there is still a need for more efforts at the conceptual and methodological level to measure child poverty and disparities. In addition, new social situations and technologies present challenges as well as opportunities to gather evidence and tackle their situation to improve children’s, all children’s, lives. The Handbook is divided into two parts, each with two sections. Part One presents and discusses ‘The State of the Art’ about child poverty conceptualisation and measurement. Part Two, ‘Future Avenues’, looks at new attempts to advance and complement knowledge about children living in poverty, describe some of their characteristics, and explore the inequalities they experience.
