Examining the links between child multi-dimensional deprivation and distance to health centres and schools

Abstract: Access to facilities such as schools, health clinics, and hospitals is important for children's development and general well-being. Access can be determined by physical distances and travel times, as well as financial, religious, cultural, and educational factors. In this chapter, travel times to schools and health facilities are explored as a barrier to access to services and, consequently, as drivers of child deprivation. The chapter examines the methodological approaches required to estimate travel time/access related to children and child deprivation/poverty as well as the relationships between access to key services and child deprivation/poverty. We developed a method to estimate travel time to the nearest health facility using open-source data on road type, land cover, and slope. Multi-level regression models were used to examine the statistical relationships between travel time and multi-dimensional child deprivation in Uganda. Results indicate that there was a 40 per cent increase in the odds of a child being deprived when travel time to the nearest health facility increased by 105 minutes.
