Quality of life and child poverty

Chapter 7 in Handbook on Child Poverty and Inequality, 2025, pp 117-129 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Quality of life is a multidimensional concept that integrates an objective and a subjective approach, comprising a number of dimensions that people evaluate differently according to the importance they give to them in their lives. It is a theoretical proposal that offers the possibility of a new outlook that not only includes the personal dimension but also the analysis of the sociopolitical context. This chapter analyses quality of life in relation to child poverty, considering poverty as a multidimensional concept. It discloses the scientific studies in this thematic field, in theoretical and methodological terms, showing that research on children's quality of life is not the same as research on child poverty. As there are few works dedicated to children's quality of life that integrate child poverty, it is necessary to continue with this line of research.
