Abstract: Accounting for the role of women in all sectors of the economy and the value of their contributions has been at the forefront of the feminist political agenda for decades. This is especially true when economic laws do not adequately account for social, environmental and cultural values in calculating economic development and human resources. While we tend to agree that it is a necessary endeavour if we are even to broach the complex challenges of achieving gender equality, it needs to be central to all discussions in the development of policy and planning to achieve sustainable development. None can be achieved as long as women remain the bit players on the global stage of sustainable development.
