Chapter 33 in Handbook of Critical Environmental Accountability and Sustainability, 2026, pp 492-503 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the potential for an updated extinction accounting framework which integrates rewilding, de-extinction and reintroduction as a mechanism of ecological restoration, species protection and extinction prevention, as well as an extinction accounting framework which includes valuations of species and an emancipatory accounting of the success/failure of strategies implemented to rewild, conduct de-extinction and reintroduce species.
