This entry sets out the background to the establishment of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the only UN agency with a regional mandate for a specific group of forced displaced persons. It also discusses the agency's role and evolution since its establishment in 1949 as well as its current challenges.
