Abstract: For over one hundred years, the International Labour Organization's (ILO) unique tripartite standard-setting process and elaborate standards supervisory mechanisms have articulated norms applicable to migrant workers. In 1949 the ILO enacted international standards for migration, and in 1975 these standards were supplemented with new provisions concerned with labour trafficking and addressing discrimination faced by migrant workers. Other ILO conventions hold special relevance for migrants and migration governance, while core international labour conventions are applicable to all migrant workers regardless of their status. Historically, ILO conventions have been more detailed than human rights conventions and have been more frequently the subject of revision. The ILO has also developed non-binding recommendations as well as general principles and guidelines specific to migration. The ILO has had significant impact on international migration law, both directly and indirectly, through the influence of international labour law on normative instruments adopted by the United Nations and other organizations.
