Migration Partnership

Chapter 57 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Migration and Asylum Law, 2025, pp 335-340 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
‘Migration partnerships’ have gained political importance in the last decades as prominent instruments of international migration governance. The term refers to the setting of dialogue and cooperation between countries of origin, transit, and destination on the diverse dimensions of migration management and refugee protection, based, among other features, on a comprehensive and balanced agenda, mutual benefits of the partners involved, mutual trust, and responsibility-sharing. This entry traces its significance at the global, regional, and national levels; delves into its main defining elements; and identifies political and legal challenges which complicate that current migration cooperation practices respond to the ‘partnership’ logic.
