Chapter 5 in Concise Introduction to Relational Economic Geography, 2026, pp 57-67 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter distinguishes three modes of governance of economic production relations: price, hierarchy and trust. Building on foundational work in transaction cost economics, economic sociology and organization studies, the chapter discusses the conditions that affect different forms of economic organization: markets, firms, networks and projects. Each of these basic forms can be viewed as a response to prior, as well as a precondition for future, location decisions.
