Chapter 9 in Concise Introduction to Relational Economic Geography, 2026, pp 108-120 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Globalization has exposed firms to increasing competition. One way for firms to respond to this competition is to create more knowledge, become more innovative, develop new products and technologies and stay ahead of competition by creating temporary monopolies. Apart from investing in internal research and knowledge production, firms acquire knowledge externally from suppliers, customers and communities to improve products and technologies and develop ideas for new solutions. Through systematic learning, knowledge is being transferred to and contextualized in the production process. Knowledge generation and learning are therefore inseparable from innovation. This chapter focuses on the link between knowledge creation, learning and innovation and shows that specific regional and national institutional contexts can lead to the formation of distinct innovation systems.
