Chapter 1 in Contingent Workers’ Voice in Southern Europe, 2023, pp 1-18 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The introductory chapter aims to outline the theoretical and methodological framework of the book. The chapter starts with a discussion around the definition of atypical and contingent work arrangements, and continues by introducing the scientific debate on the current troubles and opportunities for contingent workers' collective representation. Specifically, it focuses on two recent developments that, although they do not necessarily pose new challenges, certainly make old issues more apparent. These developments are: the rise of the gig economy and the spread of new values and expectations attached to work. The chapter finally presents an overview of the book, in which some innovative initiatives for the protection, organization and representation of contingent workers have been developed in Spain and Italy in recent years and the criteria for their selection are presented.
