The global rise of localism: national populism, neo-tribalism and the politics of knowledge
Victor Roudometof
Chapter 4 in A Modern Guide to Globalization, 2025, pp 102-122 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
While the rise of localism is often seen as synonymous with national populism, this chapter broadens the intellectual gaze to offer a more general interpretation. Through sociological lenses, national populism is emblematic of broader cultural and social trends. Following an overview that addresses populism as a subset of localism, the chapter critically juxtaposes individualization theory and the neo-tribalism thesis, arguing that the latter can offer a much more empirically substantiated interpretation of the social and cultural effects of twenty-first-century globalization. Lastly, the rise of localism is not merely a phenomenon observed in the social world but also characterizes scholarly paradigms. The chapter's last section considers academic neo-tribalism as an example of localism within the structures of social-scientific knowledge domains. The overarching goal of this discussion is to illustrate the multifaceted effects of localism on a multitude of different sites.
