Connectivity in East Asia
Colin Turner
Chapter 2 in The Asian Infrastructure System, 2026, pp 22-50 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the patterns and forms of infrastructural integration across East Asia. The analysis is divided into two sections: Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia. With regard to Southeast Asia, the focus in the chapter is on the states of the ASEAN Group. This is a loose form of integration between states and is reflected in the patterns of infrastructural integration. In this sub-region, there have been a series of initiatives within transport and energy to promote deeper ties between states, though the bilateral links tend to be stronger. As a result, despite the best of intentions, progress towards infrastructural integration across the ASEAN states has been limited. In the past decade, China, through the Belt and Road Initiative, has become an important investor in regional systems in ASEAN, though this has been matched with a mixed commitment by states. In Northeast Asia, progress has been even more erratic and tends to be based on economic interactions between these larger states within the sub-region.
