Adam Smith and economic freedom

Maria Pia Paganelli

Chapter 6 in Handbook of Research on Economic Freedom, 2024, pp 74-84 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Adam Smith is often associated with economic freedom, for good reasons. He is quite explicit in condemning limitations of economic freedom dictated by special interest groups capturing state power. But his understanding of economic freedom does not include Laissez Faire. Smith is indeed also quite explicit in supporting ‘party walls’ or regulations that limit individual freedom if the wellbeing of the majority of the population requires it.
