Abstract:
Comparative analyses of value captured by global value chain (GVC) participants show considerable variations across GVCs, representing substantial differences in governance and social conduct. This chapter represents an exploratory inquiry into these variations and seeks explanations in industrial differences in market structure, production process, and the structure of GVCs. Qualitative and quantitative comparative analyses of the largest manufacturing GVCs (by volume of trade) provide suggestive evidence for the explanatory power of these characteristics for the different distributional outcomes observed across GVCs. Our analyses provide insights into the scope of markets as a mechanism of value distribution in GVCs and offer directions for policy intervention. They demonstrate the merits of comparative GVC research for the establishment of causal relationships and the development of a theory of GVC sustainability.
