Chapter 3 in A Research Agenda for Ageing and Social Policy, 2024, pp 41-59 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter contributes to social policy agendas emerging from issues embedded in global and regional declarations on healthy ageing. These declarations set a broad agenda for governments moving forward as they address issues of ageing. Focusing on near-environments of families and communities, the authors argue that we can no longer justify placing these environments of ageing in the background, relevant only when they are urged to do more. Addressing knowledge gaps in understanding the ability of families to be supportive and of communities to be age-friendly must be an explicit part of the healthy ageing agenda and the implementation of related policy goals. Based on a critical review of knowledge gaps and their policy implications for addressing environments of ageing and wellbeing outcomes, the chapter concludes with several research questions and major issues requiring further research and policy development.
