Cultural diplomacy: The theory and the practice of a bridging concept
Roula El Derbas
Chapter 9 in Art and Human Rights, 2023, pp 188-207 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter opens a discussion on the concept and the practice of cultural diplomacy. While the concept itself is relatively recent, its application can be traced throughout history and is progressively playing a significant role in international relations. Given the fluid nature of this concept, setting terminologies is a prerequisite in this discussion in order to avoid the confusion, which could arise from the interchangeable use of cultural diplomacy with other concepts. The chapter will subsequently identify the actors involved in the implementation of cultural diplomacy while giving concrete examples illustrating its impact on geopolitical dynamics.
