Chapter 1 in Central Banks and Supervisory Architecture in Europe, 2022, pp 1-12 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The current European supervisory architecture is a complex set of different institutional set-ups abound with varying degrees of decentralised supervisory responsibilities. The Covid-19 and other recent crises have called for the need to review the state of play and put in place robust institutional frameworks. What then could be done to address the concerns about the European supervisory architecture? This chapter summarises the key findings of "Central Banks and Supervisory Architecture in Europe: Lessons from Crises in the 21st Century". Revisiting the debate on financial sector oversight, the authors of this book discuss both the scope and variety of institutional arrangements amid pressing issues such as climate change and BigTech. In this context, this book also sheds light on the role central banks play in supervision and find out about their accountability and democratic legitimacy.
