Social effects of a Basic Income

Chapter 6 in A Research Agenda for Basic Income, 2023, pp 125-168 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter will recount the early history of research on the social effects of a Basic Income; it will discuss the two genuine pilot projects that have taken place, and draw lessons from them; it will then study various other experiments and ask what we can learn from them; and finally it will ask what additional social effects of a Basic Income we can predict on the basis of its structure, with particular reference to climate change. A variety of research methods will continue to be useful, and in relation to all of them it will be particularly important to recognise that it will be particular Basic Income schemes that will be causing social effects, and not simply the structure of a Basic Income.
