The political economy of taxes: global mobility, citizenship, and democratic inclusion
Yvette Lind
Chapter 19 in Research Handbook on Law and Political Economy, 2025, pp 303-312 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter illustrates how the political economy of taxation can be imagined by studying ongoing economic-political developments currently taking place around the globe, in which taxation impacts already fragile democratic governing arrangements. The topic dealt with illustrates a highly topical area of research while at same time tapping into foundational questions surrounding the interlinking between taxation, democracy and citizenship. Sweden is used as a case study, but the findings are relevant to most other jurisdictions given the conceptual focus on the legal treatment of immigrants in addition to the classic question on how to consider inequality between the poorer and the affluent.
